Illusionist David Blaine has broken a YouTube record by live streaming a video of himself flying over the Arizona desert using nothing but large helium balloons.

The stunt, which was published to the video streaming platform on Wednesday 2 September, became the most-watched YouTube Original Live Event to date, with over 770,000 peak viewers at one time.

This impressive feat was achieved within the video’s short run time of just an hour.

Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content at YouTube said, “David Blaine exceeded expectations once again!” adding “What an inspirational moment for viewers all around the world and we’re so thrilled with what he accomplished today live on YouTube.”

From New York to Arizona

Blaine had originally intended to fly over New York, but due to weather concerns and logistical issues he had to change his course and settle on Arizona instead.

Within 40 minutes from lift off, shortly before 8 AM Pacific Time, Blaine had ascended to over 19,000 feet.

He managed to reach a height of 24,900 feet at his peak, before parachuting to the ground.

The livestream event was hosted by YouTube Creator and tech expert Marques Brownlee and featured appearances from actors Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Olivia Wilde, Jason Sudeikis, Casey Neistat, as well as professional surfer Jamie O’Brien.

A special appearance was also made by David Blaine’s daughter, Dessa.
