‘Heaven has gained a beautiful angel’: Tributes pour in for 10-year-old girl

Heartfelt comments followed after police were called to the scene of a crash yesterday (March 5) around 5pm, involving two children and a black BMW i40 at Kendal Rugby Club on Shap Road.

The second child, an eight-year-old girl, also from Kendal, was taken to the hospital for treatment. However, her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 40-year-old man from Lancaster was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

At this stage, police say ‘there is no indication to suggest that this incident was a deliberate act’.

The MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, Tim Farron, said he is ‘praying’ for the community.

“This is devastating, utterly heart-breaking news,” he said.

“I’m praying for the children and for their families and friends. Our community in Kendal is stunned and in mourning.”

Kendal’s Mayor, Cllr Jonathan Cornthwaite, said it is “hard to put into words the sense of shock at such a tragic event”.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected by this terrible event.”

He also noted that “churches across Kendal are open today for anyone needing a moment of quiet reflection.”

The Mayor of Ulverston, Cllr Graham Scrogham, added: “My deepest sympathy goes out to all the families.”

Readers from across Cumbria flooded the Westmorland Gazette with heartfelt messages for the 10-year-old girl, her family, and the 8-year-old who is currently receiving hospital treatment.

Rudy Hibbert wrote: “Sending love at this tragic time to the young girl’s family and friends. Thinking of you all at this terrible time and hoping you find the strength to get through it.”

Mark said: “Such heart-breaking news about the terrible events at Kendal Rugby Club yesterday. My thoughts are with the girl’s family, friends, and school at this very sad time. Also, thinking about the girl who was injured and her amazing family.”

Julie Stuart shared: “Heaven has gained a beautiful angel. Safe in the arms of the Lord, fly free. Love and prayers to all the family.”

Jonathan Higgins also shared: “As a parent of boys who both play grassroots football, I cannot imagine how the families of the children affected must feel, it is a terrible tragedy and my total sympathy and best wishes go out to them.”
