In pictures: Firefighters tackle wildfires along West Cumbria’s coastline

Firefighters were dispatched to multiple locations along the coastline, particularly between St Bees and Nethertown, where the fires are believed to have been sparked by the arrival of the historic Tangmere steam locomotive.

However, authorities have yet to confirm this link.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing between six and eight fires along the coast, though some sources suggest the number could be higher.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, Cumbria Police and West Cumbria Search and Rescue were all deployed in the effort to put out the fires which occurred just a day after Cumbria Fire and Rescue warned of the dangers of wildfires due to the dry weather seen in Cumbria over the past month.

The multi-agency response ‘worked tirelessly through’ the night to manage the situation, and the incident has since been reported to be brought ‘under control’.

Rail services on the Cumbrian coastal line were disrupted whilst the efforts to put the fires continued but have since resumed on Sunday morning. Copeland Police have asked local residents to stay away from areas affected by Saturday’s fires.
